AUSTRALIA'S DRY RUN
The Murray-Darling Basin, known as Australia’s “bread basket” endured one of the most severe and prolonged droughts in the country’s recorded history from 1997 to 2009. Known as the Millennium Drought, it exposed deep vulnerabilities in a river system that supports much of the country’s agriculture and rural life. At its peak around 2006–2007, water storages fell to historic lows, and the land cracked under the weight of extreme, unrelenting dryness. These images trace the slow disappearance of water across vast farmlands and fragile ecosystems, while offering a window into the lives of those who endured the drought—farmers, townspeople, and others whose futures are tied to the Basin. Together, they tell a story of endurance, ecological strain, and the profound consequences of a changing climate.
